Rare Frequency

Rare Frequency is a radio program on WZBC 90.3 in Boston, dj'ed by Susanna Bolle, that's devoted to experimental, electronic, and other unusual music. And, yes, the stuff she plays is pretty rare as far as these things go.

But, Rare Frequency has grown in many directions over the years from its base as a weekly radio program featuring unusual sounds. It's now available via podcast, and has extensive articles, reviews, and interviews on the companion website, along with links and found items of interest.

As such, the website presented a bit of a challenge, since, while the radio program needed to be front-and-center, what I was really dealing with was an extensive online publication. In the design, I broke out the home page along the lines of an online magazine, providing a point of entry into all the major topics, with clear calls to action to subscribe in the several ways possible to the site.

Moreover, I set-up the podcasting backend so that it would appear in iTunes, the most popular place people go for podcasts, and added both a system for accepting email subscriptions and an RSS feed. Susanna's many fans are devoted, but the occasional email reminder surely helps to keep listenership rates up. Lastly, the whole site is built using web standards and a content management system, so that little technical knowledge is necessary to keep fresh content flowing to the site.
